Michele Hornish runs Every State Blue, which aims to contest elections even in deep red areas. I wanted to speak to her because she lives in St. Louis, and Missouri is in the midst of repealing, or replacing, the pro-choice ballot measure it passed with in 2024.

This is not the first time the legislature has done that. For the last decade, the Missouri legislature has negated ballot measures - including one that would have banned gerrymandering and made legislators more financially accountable.

I wanted to find out how a state legislative body could so casually ignore the will of the people.

It was a fascinating discussion. I will share two tidbits with you.

One, many state and federal seats held by Republicans are uncontested. House Speaker Mike Johnson’s constituents literally had no choice but to vote for him or not vote.

Two, a lot of people who want progressive policies think that Trump and Republicans are dedicated to giving them those policies. Every State Blue is helping to fill the misleading messaging that is behind that.
